- Internet 'on-the-Move' in the UK

The increasing importance of the Internet in the daily lives of UK consumers is driving demand for Internet usage out of the home and office, to a variety of public venues such as Internet cafés, airports, libraries, supermarkets, and even pubs.

  • 95.5% of current UK Internet users state that they will be using the Internet more in the future (based on a sample 2,172 Interviews)
  • 74.0% of UK users also believe that they will be using the Internet more 'on-the-move' in the future

Allegra Strategies forecasts that the number of public Internet access points in the UK will exceed 60,000 units by December 2002, attracting more than 320 million visitors per year to Internet cafés, Internet kiosks and Internet in public libraries. Government initiatives to promote Internet access to all citizens are also helping to drive these developments. In addition, by 2002, as many 18.5 million consumers will be using their mobile phones and other mobile devices such as PDAs to access a variety of Internet-based services, including banking, email, music and entertainment. Over the next few years the Internet will become available on transport means such planes, trains and cars; as well as on entertainment devices such as MP3 players, portable game consoles and even watches, making the Internet truly ubiquitous and an integral part of UK lifestyles. Indeed, the total number of UK Internet access terminals and devices, both in and out of the home, is projected to surpass the UK population by 2003.
